A Short History of Embroidered Clothing

Embroidery is an ancient art. Paintings found in tombs in ancient Eygypt depict couch covers, hangings, tents and clothes embellished with embroidery. Additionally, paintings found on ancient Greek vases show quilted armor-like suits adorned with embroidery stitching.

Samples of embroidery work can be traced back to other countries as well, such as China, Persia, India and England. Each of these countries developed its own distinctive style of embroidery, incorporating the culture of their history and traditions. Ornately embroidered clothing, religious objects, and household items demonstrated wealth in many cultures including ancient Persia, India, China, Japan, the Bysantine Empire and Medieval and Baroque Europe (read more about ethnic embroidery styles)

The household and costume embroidery of the Elizabethan period is well renowned. Velvet, brocade and silk were stitched with gold and silver thread and the designs were often enhanced with pearls and gems.

Throughout the centuries, experienced embroiderers passed their techniques down to the next generation, and each new generation of embroiderers contributed their own intricate, detailed and elaborate techniques to the art.

Needlework and embroidery is very much alive in the 21st century. Just as knitting has enjoyed a modern day revival, embroidery remains  a celebrated pastime (and a successful commercial industry), with embroidered items such as blankets for newborns, linens and clothing  being popular gifts for friends and loved ones.

While there are still individuals that patiently engage in the skill of hand embroidery, advanced technology has produced computer software and high-tech embroidery machines which make it possible to quickly and effortlessly fashion beautiful embroidery designs.
